Snow Load Facts
The weight of snow depends on its density, which can vary widely depending on whether the snow is light and fluffy or wet and heavy. Here's a rough breakdown. Our pergolas can carry a snow load of about 50 pounds per square foot. To find the depth of snow that corresponds to 50 pounds per square foot of snow load, divide the snow load by the density of the snow. Examples of different types of snow can be seen below. If you know the typical snow density in your area, you can refine the estimate even further!

Light, Fluffy Snow
Light, fluffy snow carries around 3 - 5 pounds per cubic feet of weight.
Examples:
Light and fluffy snow (5 lbs/ft³):
50 psf ÷ 5 lbs/ft³ = 10 feet (or 120 inches)
This means that our products can possibly hold up to 10 feet of light and fluffy snow!

Average-Density Snow
Average density snow carries around 12 - 20 pounds per cubic foot of weight.
Examples:
Average density snow (15 lbs/ft³):
50 psf ÷ 15 lbs/ft³ = 3.33 feet (or ~40 inches)
This means that our products can possibly hold up to 3.33 feet of average snow!

Wet, Heavy Snow
Wet, heavy snow carries around 20 - 25 pounds per cubic foot of weight.
Examples:
Wet and Heavy snow (20 lbs/ft³):
50 psf ÷ 20 lbs/ft³ = 2.5 feet (or 30 inches)
This means that our products can possibly hold up to 2.5 feet of wet, heavy snow!
